On Google Maps, customers can leave a star rating without writing anything. Google's Maps help page describes the step as: "To score the place, click the stars. You can also write a review." The words are optional, so some customers skip them.
Those ratings still count toward your star average, and they still show on your profile, so they deserve a little attention.
Should you reply to a review with no text?
For low ratings, yes, usually. Future customers who read your reviews will see a 1-star or 2-star with nothing next to it. A short, calm reply shows that someone is paying attention and gives the reviewer an easy way to tell you what happened.
For 4 and 5 stars with no text, a reply is optional. Google's reply tips suggest that instead of "sending the same 'thank you' to everyone," you focus on reviews where you can share a helpful update or answer a question. A short, varied thank-you is still a nice touch if you have time. If you are short on time, answer the low ratings first.
First, check who it is
Google reviews are not anonymous. Google's help page says "You're unable to add an anonymous review," and the name on the reviewer's profile is public. Before you reply:
- Look the name up in your bookings, receipts or job list around the review date.
- If you find them, it is often better to fix the problem directly (by phone or email, if they gave you their details as a customer) and keep the public reply short.
- If you cannot find them, do not guess and do not accuse. A neutral reply that invites contact works for both a real customer and a mistaken rating.
Never post anything in public that confirms private details about the person, such as what they bought, their appointment or treatment. For health businesses this matters even more; see our industry templates.

State it once, politely. Do not say the review is fake.
Templates for 4-star and 5-star ratings with no text

When to report a star-only rating
A low rating with no text is not against Google's rules by itself. Google's reporting page says that only reviews that violate Google policies are eligible for removal, and asks owners not to report a review just because they disagree with it.
Reporting can make sense when there are signs of fake engagement, for example a burst of 1-star ratings with no text from accounts you cannot match to any customer, around the same time. Our guide to fake reviews explains how to report and appeal, and what Google's policy covers.
After you reply
- The reviewer is notified. Google's Manage customer reviews page says the person is told when you reply, and that customers can still change their review after reading it.
- Do not ask them to change the rating in public. Fix the problem, and let them decide. Never offer a discount or gift in exchange for changing or removing a review. Google's tips page calls that "strictly prohibited."
- Look for patterns. If several low star-only ratings arrive in one week, check whether something changed, such as wait times, staff or hours.
Frequently asked questions
Can a customer leave a Google review with only stars?
Yes. On Google Maps, customers click the stars to score a place and can choose whether to also write a review. Rating-only reviews still show on your profile.
Should I reply to a 1-star review that has no comment?
Usually yes. A short, calm reply that invites the person to contact you shows future customers that you care, and it is the only way to learn what went wrong. Do not guess, accuse or share private details.
Should I reply to 5-star ratings with no text?
It is optional. A short, varied thank-you is a nice touch. Google suggests not sending the same thank-you to everyone, so if time is short, answer low ratings and reviews with questions first.
Can I find out who left a star-only rating?
Google reviews are not anonymous, so the reviewer's public profile name shows next to the rating. Check it against your own records, but never post private details about them in your reply.
Will Google remove a 1-star rating with no text?
Not just because it has no text. Google removes reviews that break its policies, such as fake engagement. If you see signs of fake ratings, report them through your Business Profile.
