Do review replies help local SEO and Google Maps ranking?

You will find plenty of confident claims online. Here is what Google has published, what nobody outside Google knows for sure, and what is worth your time either way.

Short answer: Google recommends replying to reviews and lists it as one of its tips for local ranking, but it has not said that replies are a direct ranking factor. What Google does say clearly is that reviews matter for how prominent your business is, and that replies matter to customers. Here are the details, with links so you can check them yourself.

What Google says, in its own words

Google's help page Tips to improve your local ranking on Google includes a section called "Respond to reviews." It reads: "When you reply to customer reviews, it shows that you value their feedback. Positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out."

Google's Manage customer reviews page says something similar: "When you reply to their reviews, you show them that you value their feedback."

On the same local ranking page, Google says local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity," and then describes three factors:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches what someone searched for. Google says complete, detailed business info helps here.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the searcher. You cannot change this one.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is. Google says this is based on things like how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have, and that "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."

Google also states: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." Keep that in mind the next time someone guarantees you a top-three spot on Maps.

What Google does not say

Google does not say that each reply moves you up the map, that replying faster ranks you higher, or that keywords in your replies help. Google says it does its best to keep the details of its search algorithm confidential. Anyone who tells you exactly how much replies count is guessing, even if it is an educated guess.

So the honest position is this: replying is recommended by Google, it sits on Google's list of local ranking tips and it clearly helps with customers. Whether it is a direct ranking signal is not public.

How replies can still pay off

Even without a confirmed ranking boost, replies support the things Google does confirm:

  1. More reviews over time. Google's Tips to get more reviews lists "Reply to reviews" as a best practice for getting more reviews. More reviews feed prominence, which Google says can help local ranking.
  2. Better ratings over time. Google notes that a customer is notified when you reply and can still change their review afterwards. A fair, helpful reply to a complaint gives that customer a reason to take another look.
  3. More people choosing you once they find you. Ranking only gets you seen. In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 37% of people said an owner response is one of the things that makes a review trustworthy, and 42% said they are unlikely to use a business that ignores its reviews entirely.

What Google confirms is worth doing

If you want better local visibility, these come straight from Google's local ranking page:

  • Verify your business. Google says this makes it more likely to show up in results.
  • Complete and correct info: address, hours (including special hours), category and attributes such as parking or Wi-Fi.
  • Photos and videos of what you actually offer.
  • Reviews and replies. Ask every customer for a review in the same way, and reply to all of them.

When you ask for reviews, stay inside the rules. Google's Maps content policy does not allow businesses to offer incentives for reviews, to discourage negative reviews or to selectively ask only happy customers.

Review request: send the same message to every customer

Hi [Name], thanks for choosing [business] for [service/visit]. If you have a minute, we would really value an honest review on Google, good or bad. It helps us improve and helps neighbors find us: [your Google review link]. [First name]

Send it to everyone, not just the customers you think were happy, and do not attach a discount or gift.

Should you reply to old reviews?

Yes, if they are unanswered and still visible. A thoughtful reply to an old complaint shows readers that things have changed. Do not expect a jump in rankings from it, and do not reply to dozens at once with the same sentence.

Reply to an older unanswered complaint

Hi [Name], we are sorry this went unanswered for so long. You raised [the issue], and since then we have [real change]. If you are open to it, we would like to hear more at [phone/email]. [First name], owner

The bottom line

Reply to every review because Google recommends it and because customers notice. Treat any ranking benefit as a bonus, not a promise. Put your energy into the parts Google confirms: a complete profile, steady new reviews and replies that sound like a real person wrote them.

Frequently asked questions

Is responding to reviews a Google ranking factor?

Google has not said so. It lists "Respond to reviews" on its page of tips to improve local ranking and says replies show you value feedback and help you stand out, but it has not confirmed replies as a direct ranking signal. It does say that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.

Do keywords in review replies help SEO?

There is no Google statement saying they do. Replies stuffed with keywords read like ads to the customers who see them. Write for the reader and mention a service only when it fits naturally.

Can anyone guarantee a higher Google Maps ranking?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and it keeps its ranking details confidential. Be wary of anyone who promises a specific position.

What helps local ranking the most?

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. You can improve relevance with a complete, accurate profile and prominence with more reviews, good ratings and links from other websites. Distance depends on where the searcher is.

How long does it take to see a difference?

There is no published timeline. Treat profile improvements and regular replies as an ongoing habit, not a one-time fix, and judge progress over months.
